The Latter Prophets of the Hebrew Bible present a strange historical anomaly, as prophets everywhere else in the ancient Near East are not nearly so literate and broad-ranging in scope. Modern historical-critical and classical rabbinic approaches propose widely divergent views of what prophets were and what they were doing. This presentation will survey some of these approaches and suggest that there is much that can be learned by seeing these perspectives in conversation with each other.
